Imagine It! Unit 9 is titled “Red, White, and Blue” and highlights the values of America which include, but are not limited to: freedom, democracy, liberty, and justice. These activities are flexible and can be completed throughout the unit during different parts of the ELA block. What is Patriotism?Patriotism is a valuable trait for students to be able model and identify both in their classroom and in their community. After you’ve read a few stories about patriotism and students are beginning to be able to identify the concept of patriotism, provide students with a few extra texts from the media center or personal library that show symbols of patriotism. Students will explore the texts to identify evidence of patriotism in unit stories and the additional text. They will then be asked to use Seesaw to record their findings. Seesaw is a digital journal students can use to showcase their work and it can also be used by teachers to assign specific tasks to either one or multiple students in their class. If you are not familiar with Seesaw, check out this quick tutorial. **Teacher Tip** Create your seesaw class on the web or in the Seesaw app before implementing this activity with your students. This Seesaw Activity will have students browse through the texts and select illustrations that show patriotism. This could be in the form of characters wearing patriotic gear, celebrating America, or exhibiting values and beliefs that have been previously discussed in the unit. This project should is easy to do with Seesaw, but could be modified as an unplugged journal reflection. American SymbolsThe United States has many symbols that exhibit the values that our country believes in. It is important that students know these symbols so they are familiar with the values of our country. Students will work with their partners to research a teacher assigned symbol during their workstation time. Students will use the Epic App to find their American symbol and listen to their book during workstation time.
Students can add the book to their favorites by clicking the heart icon after opening the selected book. Students will listen to their book and then illustrate and write a sentence about their symbol when finished. If the activity is being used in workstations, students will use this task card while accessing the Epic App to read about their symbol. What America Means to MeAmerica and its beliefs represent many different things to different people. Students should be able to respond to a text and the unit theme by identifying what America means to them. This activity will allow students to use Book Creator to create a collaborative book that describes what America means to them.
Students can be placed into small groups of 4-6 students. Each student will use the task card to create their individual page for their group’s book. Once each student has finished their page, the group will collaborate to make a front cover for their book. Once each group has completed their book, the teacher will share them with the class. **Teacher Tip** If you have a limited number of devices, this activity can be created as a class book.
