Stick To It is all about perseverance and how to persevere to accomplish tasks like learning how to ride a bike, learning to read, playing an instrument, or even play a sport. Perseverance is about working hard despite disappointment or failure. It teaches us to keep trying even if takes days, months or years to succeed.
Perseverance & Problem Solving with Code - Inquiry
This activity involves coding and using algorithms to problems and persevere through tasks. An algorithm is step by step sets of operations needed to reach a goal. So you ask What is programming or coding? Computer programming, also known as coding, is the process of creating software. But what exactly is software, and how is it made?
What is Software? Software is a set of instructions for a computer to perform, like a cooking recipe:
So, programming is writing instructions for a computer to perform...soon enough you will be working with your students coding events in a story! To get the students excited about this activity begin with the Going on a Bear Hunt Song.
Have students stand up and get moving to act out the movements in the Bear Hunt
Begin with reading We're Going on A Bear Hunt from Amazon, school library, or you can listen to the read aloud on YouTube.
After completing the Bear Hunt coding activity we are going to build on our coding knowledge by using technology….meet Cubetto!
You can check out Cubetto with your schools DIS (digital integration specialist). *Teacher Tech Tips: Cubetto Instructions.
Once you set up your Cubetto, and have the application downloaded on your iPad have students sit in a circle on the carpet. Lay out the Cubetto Map in the center. Begin by giving students an overview about Cubetto.
Work together as a class, calling on students one at a time, to have them give you directions to get Cubetto to different points and landmarks on the map. Make sure students are using positional vocabulary. To wrap up this activity call on a couple students to code and give directions to each other to move Cubetto around, while monitoring. Encourage the students to work together to navigate Cubetto around the map. Using Book Creator to Make Connections
This activity is meant to be used in small group or during work stations.
Download the Book Creator app for Chrome or the Book Creator app on the iPad.
Comparing Familiar Texts Using Epic!
Now we will explore different texts that set great examples of perseverance and working hard to succeed! Who doesn't love a great book that also teaches a lesson?
This activity will work best after reading Bunny Cakes. Be sure to stop and discuss throughout the story the different trials and tribulations that Max went through in the story. Use epic! To read the text The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires. Stop throughout the story to read and discuss the text. Discuss the problems the character went through.
To sign up for Epic! Click here.
Using Classroom Screen create a T-Chart to compare and contrast the two stories. Discuss how the characters have persevered to accomplish their tasks. Here is a Classroom Screen tutorial for those who are unfamiliar with this fabulous online resource!
After doing this whole group during workstations, add the Growth Mindset reading collection from epic! for your students to explore. This is a collection of books that will help students develop a belief that hard work, perseverance, practice and dedication will lead to success….just like in Unit 5!
