Kindness Selfie with PicCollage - Whole Group
The overarching theme of this unit is kindness. In this unit, students will explore the concept of kindness. Below you will find various types of activities that will support teaching this theme.
To introduce students to this concept, you will watch the video below whole group. This will lead into a class discussion about what kindness is and how we can show kindness in our daily lives or classrooms. Through this discussion, be sure to emphasize the causes and effects of kindness on others. Students will then read the story Because of You.

To kick off this activity, you will watch the following clip to help your kids learn more about cause and effect.
Your students will read the story, For the Love of Our Earth, to recognize cause and effect relationships. After reading the story, students will be given a set of cause and effect statement cards to sort. Students will work in small groups to identify whether the statement on their card is a cause or an effect. They will arrange their cards on a graphic organizer and take a picture of their work with their iPad and share on Seesaw. Here is atask card for this activity.
If you have never used Seesaw, please watch this short video to find out how to use this program for your class. It’s a great resource!
Sequencing with Book Creator - Small Group
A great way to jumpstart this lesson is to view the following sequence video from Brainpop Jr! This is a great resource for you! It can be used to introduce lessons, reinforce standards, and even serve as a review! Directions on how to access Brainpop Jr. can be found here.
You and your students will read the story, Elves and the Shoemaker, and sequence the story using transitional words. Make sure to identify the main idea and details of the story.
For this activity, your students will be using a great technology tool called Book Creator! This iPad app allows students to create their very own books. They can also write, add pictures, draw, and much more. For your convenience, we’ve provided atask card that you can print off for your students. This task card is written in kid-friendly language and can be used if you’re having your students do this independently.
Differentiation
There are a few different ways that you can scaffold for your groups. For your higher group, you can have students type in their own words into Book Creator the major events in Elves and the Shoemaker. For students who may need extra help writing a complete sentence independently, you can have the major events already printed out for the students to reference and identify the sequence in the story.
Book Creator also allows recording, so students could also record themselves telling the major events. This could also be useful for any ELL students you may have who are not comfortable with writing yet. Connecting Learning with Padlet - Inquiry
In this lesson, students will have a chance to see how the theme of kindness connects to all of the stories in this unit. This activity will be great to use during the inquiry week.
You and your students till begin this activity by creating a whole group Padlet. This
digital tool is a great resource that can enhance classroom discussions. Students can add evidence and thoughts in real time and also see what others are posting.
You will create the Padlet that your students will be responding on! If you would like to use a Padlet that we have already created please click here.
You can always create your own and use the image above as a reference too! Once your Padlet is created, hit share, then the share/export/embed tab. You can print or project the QR code for your students to scan to access the Padlet.
Under each story column, students will provide evidence showing how the story conveys the theme of Kindness. Your students can use this task card to complete this activity. *Make sure students write their name in the “Title” section of their response*
Once you and the students have added evidence to the Padlet, the students will begin working on comparing and contrasting two stories from Unit 1.
Sharing Work
When an activity has been completed, students should be given the opportunity to share with their peers. We recommend using the following ways:
*Depending on your class size and iPad accessibility, it will be left to your discretion of how your students will complete the activity (independent, pairs, small group).
