Nature Walk - Whole GroupInquiry-based learning is about triggering curiosity. For our introduction of Unit 2, Let’s Explore, we will use inquiry to get students excited about the upcoming stories. Each week students will gain a better understanding of the natural world around them as they progress through the unit. In this activity, students will work in groups (4-5 students) to go on a nature walk. During the nature walk, students will take two photos of what they find interesting in nature and post their findings in the Seesaw journal. Each student will respond positively to two other posts of either what they would like to learn more about or what they already knew about, to enhance inquiry. Here is a task card for this activity if needed. To learn more about Seesaw click here.
Text Features with PicCollage - Whole Group
In this activity, students will use Pic Collage to create a collage of these new text features, as well as, other text features that they may know from the story, and publish the collage in SeeSaw. Use these resources, if you need more support with using PicCollage and Seesaw. Students will use this task card to complete the activity. After students have completed the activity, you can allow some time for them to view the SeeSaw journal posts from other groups and post a positive comment.
*Teacher Tip: You may find it beneficial to create table teams or other groupings to your Seesaw class for group activities. You would do this by simply adding “students” to your Seesaw class as you would individual students, and then name them by your table teams instead of an individual student’s name. Also be sure you have enabled commenting in your Seesaw settings. See the examples below. Shades of Meaning with Buncee - WorkstationIn the story, If You Find a Rock, students will continue to research the theme Let’s Explore. During this lesson, students will explore the Big Idea question - What did you discover outside today? In this selection, they will learn about many types of rocks and will describe these rocks using nuances, or shades of meaning. Before you begin reading, set the purpose by explaining to the students that they will be reading to locate or recognize different descriptions of rocks. In workstations, they will work independently and use the buncee app to create a page demonstrating shades of meaning.

For the closure of the lesson, students will share their work with you and their peers. They will be able to see the progression of the descriptive words. As an extension activity, you can have students to expand on some of the words that were given. You may also choose to list them on the board. *Teacher Tech Tip: You can have students use the search engine, Kiddle, which allows students to search the web for safe images and videos, to search for pictures and then label the nuances. Creating a Narrative Story with Book Creator - Writing
Students will write a narrative about another perspective of a character in the story for example: the perspective of the wasps living in the birdhouse or the perspective of the birds building a nest in the birdhouse). Students will need to use a story map to organize their thoughts before creating their story in Book Creator. They will use this task card to create their story. Their stories could be written during writing time or in a workstation.
