The Imagine It Unit 5: What’s the Weather introduces your students to stories about different types of weather. Seesaw Writing Warm-UPStudents will begin the unit with a warm up activity using the Seesaw app or website that can be completed in workstations. To learn more about Seesaw, click here or access a the Getting Started guide here. You will need to add the SeeSaw Unit 5 Warm Up Activity into your own activity library for students to access. During this workstation activity, they can choose a type of weather they know about and write three sentences describing the weather. If some are struggling with writing sentences, they can write adjectives. Click here for the task card that can be put in the workstation to direct your students through the activity. *Once they have completed their activity digitally and you have approved it, students can comment positive feedback on their peers work. Share tips with students on how to comment appropriately. Be sure you have this feature turned on in the settings. If you do not have access to technology, here is the template to print out and complete offline. Weather Research PicCollageThroughout Unit 5, the students will be reading some nonfiction texts with amazing photographs of various types of weather. These grab the students attention and encourage conversations about the photos. In the next activity, the students will screenshot three images of a given type of weather to create a collage! They will also be doing some research on the given type of weather. To begin the activity, you will direct students to access EPIC. If you are unfamiliar with EPIC, click here for a tutorial to follow in setting up your class. Students will need to be given a collection of books on weather. Here is a pre-made collection to add to your personal EPIC Library and customize for your students, or you can create your own! Since the students will be making a collage with the pictures, the easiest way for them to access these would be to screenshot them, which will save the images in the camera roll on the iPad they are using. *Teacher Tip: If you do not have access to EPIC, students can use their Imagine It Books, Library Books, or Reading A-Z resources. The students could take pictures with the iPad, and use those for their collage.
Weather Forecast Unit Wrap-UpAt the end of unit 5, your students should have a clear understanding about most types of weather and storms. To conclude the unit, your students will create their very own newscast! They will work in small groups, as well as need teacher assistance and complete an independent task to post on Seesaw. This is a unit wrap up which will allow students to use all of the knowledge they have gained to create and present a final project.
To begin the activity place students in to groups or you can allow them to choose their groups on their own. The students will need to choose what parts they would like perform in the Newscast. The parts include an introduction, description of the weather, the effects on us, comparing it to the past, and the closing. Click here for the document where students choose their parts.
When starting to record newscasts, you will need to make sure you have a previously created account with TouchCast. First you will select the "News Studio" background. Next, it will ask you to give your Newscast a title. After that, choose the camera tab and “swap” the camera so you can video the students. Be sure each student has their cue card and begin recording as they read their script. *Teacher Tip: In between each student, use the pause button. This allows you to continue recording where you left off to complete the newscast from beginning to end. When it is completed, hit done. Once completed, you can edit if needed (ex. Trim, delete, start over). It will ask you to export it once you are satisfied with the recording. Then, share their newscast! Click here to view a video showing how to use TouchCast. Make sure to download the video and then open it to view. Standards ELA W 4.5, R.I. 6.1, R.I. 7, R.L 4 Computer Science 1.DL.1.2, 1.NI.1.1, 1 NI.1.2 AuthorsKrista Neuman
