When exploring the theme “I Think I Can” we explored how we could try our best and never give up. This blog will show you three activities and some bonus ideas to incorporate technology into this unit. In this unit we are using two apps. The first is Pic Collage and we will be making a picture collage of images. The second is Book Creator. We will be making a scrapbook to describe the characters’ feelings and actions or compare and contrasting characters’ experiences to those of the reader.
Our activities are connected to each other to have a final result of a scrapbook responding to the characters’ actions and feelings connected to the text as well as to the reader. These activities can be completed in a few different ways. You can work independently, use shoulder partners, or work as a table group to complete the scrapbook. Brainstorming with PicCollage
Character Scrapbook: Part I
We loved brainstorming the ideas to see what was harder for students. The next activity will be used on day 3 or 4 of the first week of the unit. This activity is going over Book Creator, a review of Franklin Rides a Bike, and completing their scrapbook page for The Kite. Decide what way works best for you to divide up each of these tasks.
The teacher will introduce/review Book Creator (app or web based program). If you have not used Book Creator with your students, a great video to use can be found here. If you want teacher directions in a list, click here. The teacher can also show a sample of the scrapbook made here.
As a teacher, you need to choose if you want to do this the same day as reviewing Franklin Rides a Bike or you can do it the day after. Either way, the students will go to their seat and describe how Frog and Toad worked together as a team to figure out how to fly the kite. They will discuss the actions and feelings of both as they tried different strategies to get the kite to fly. Students will use jot thoughts to record the characters’ feelings and actions. They will take the Jot Thoughts and create their next scrapbook page. Before the students record in their scrapbook, the teacher will show page 5 and page 6 of their scrapbook with the “I do” example from the first two pages of the story and an example of how to add more to their scrapbook.
The students can share their scrapbook with the table or class as time allows.
Character Scrapbook: Part II
We will review the scrapbook page up to this point and remind the student of expectations. Then students will record their entry for today’s story comparing themselves and their feelings and experiences to the main character (or character of their choice).
Now that you have finished the first two weeks of the unit. You can repeat with week 3 in The Itsy Bitsy Spider and The Tortoise and The Hare. You can decide which worked better with your class or which standard to work on more by comparing the characters’ actions and feelings or comparing the reader to the main character. In week 4 for Winners Never Quit, the story works nicely to use the standard Compare and contrast characters’ experiences to those of the reader. The students will have completed a scrapbook for Unit 7 and can share with a partner, the table or the class. The best part of using Book Creator is you are able to publish it as a PDF to share with parents using Seesaw or you can even email it to parents. Here is a link to walk you through how to export the book as a PDF.
When exporting the book as a PDF, you can copy it directly to Seesaw and the student will select their name to upload to their account. This might be the easier way to allow the students to present.
